Which Us University Is Best For Engineering?

College Factual reviewed 419 colleges and universities in calculating their rankings of the best engineering schools for the year 2022. The rankings are updated to reflect the changes in the rankings, which are published each year. Shown on this list means that a school was in the top 15% of 419 different U.S. engineering schools analyzed by College Factual. To arrive at an optimal ranking overall for engineering schools, we combined our rankings at each level, weighting them based on how many degrees were awarded at each level. To do so, College Factual has created a series of specialty-specific rankings, including this best engineering schools list, to help guide your college decisions.

With many universities ranking worldwide in Engineering colleges around the world, listed below are the best universities in the United States that are globally ranked for engineering according to the World University Rankings for the year 2022. International students considering an Engineering career in USA, since more than 100 of top Engineering colleges in America are globally ranked, offering diverse amount of majors and programs, according to The World University Rankings 2022.

Besides these top schools in Engineering, there are many others across the USA offering Engineering programs which are catered for the international students, like University of Southern Indiana (USI) and the University of Dayton. The California Institute of Technology offers 50 different undergraduate and graduate degree programs in engineering, including some PhD programs. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology offers graduate and undergraduate programs, as well as many different engineering programs.

MIT is known to have amazing engineering programs, with almost 45 percent of all of the schools graduate students being in some kind of engineering discipline. The best engineering college in the United States according to rankings is Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Rounding out the Top 5 best schools to study engineering is California Institute of Technology.

One of the best resources for international students who are making up their minds about where to study engineering is U.S. News College Rankings, which ranks the best schools in engineering by general qualitative qualities. In fact, the United States has the highest significant number of Engineering colleges ranked highly in global best colleges lists. The Electrical engineering discipline has the highest number of universities than any other discipline on the Engineering Rankings, at 507 universities, including 81 universities in the United States. The civil and structural engineering rankings have 203 universities represented this year, including 33 of them in the US.

Of the total 401 universities, big mover-ups this year in the chemical engineering rankings included Cornell University (up eight spots to 30th), University of Pennsylvania (up eight spots to 40th joint), and University of Delaware (down 19 spots to 48th joint). Of the 501 ranked mechanical, aeronautical, and aerospace engineering universities worldwide, 87 are located in the United States. There are over 2,300 bachelors degrees in technology and engineering at more than 340 accredited colleges and universities in the United States.

Now, one of the largest colleges in the nation, this Engineering College has about 20,000 students across 15 departments. The engineering school is MITs largest, with eight departments, over 250 professors, and an array of amenities. Located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Harvard University is an established institution that is now the #12 best college for engineering globally. The only public school of engineering in the metro area, City College of New Yorks Grove School of Engineering also offers some of the best programs in the country, according to U.S. News and World Reports 2023 ranking of best graduate schools released today.

The U.S. News & World Report Best Engineering Schools rankings rank schools on research activities, faculty resources, student academic performance, and evaluations from other engineering schools and employers. The rankings here are based on the US News & World Report Specialties rankings, as well as the College Factual rankings, once again only for undergraduate programs (not including quality of the schools masters or PhD programs).

You will notice a bit of overlap across the various fields (MIT, Georgia Tech, and the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology are all in the rankings in most of these, for example), but there are still some distinct differences as to which schools are best at what specific specialties.

There is also difference between engineering schools (which are solely focused on fields in engineering, such as mechanical engineering and computer science) and larger universities which have strong engineering programs in-house (such as Cornells College of Engineering). The three schools we listed below have the best computer engineering programs at the bachelors level in the United States (if you are looking for the best computer science programs, instead, see this post). Generally speaking, colleges and universities with a tech background typically offer better educations when it comes to engineering fields. These are a few other schools that are also worth noting, which are great, too, but just did not make the cut for the top best engineering schools honor from College Factual.

Ranking #3 in the best schools of 2576 colleges across the country means that Stanford is an excellent college in general. Ranked #2 globally, Stanford is highly regarded for creating a global platform that allows students to gain hands-on experience in a culturally diverse setting, making it one of the more desirable colleges to study engineering.

Furthermore, The Center for World University Rankings ranks CCNY among the top 1.8% universities globally for academic achievement. The latest QS Rankings World Universities 2020, ranked top universities for 48 different subjects, including the worlds top 502 engineering and technical schools -- 91 of them are located in the United States.

Kettering University is 16th in the country for engineering universities not awarded doctorates, and 5th nationally in mechanical engineering programs, according to U.S. News & World Reports Best Colleges 2019, released Sept. 10. College Factual recognized Kettering Universitys Mechanical Engineering program as the best in the nation in 2018. The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) is 16th in its Electrical/Electronic/Communication Engineering Program (U.S. News & World Report Ranking of Top Engineering Schools, published in March, 2021).
